Leaving a legacy is an important part of life’s purpose. People want to know that their lives matter in some way. The legacy may not be a contribution that that changes the universe; it may be a contribution that will always be remembered by those lives you influenced and something that they can be pass forward to others. Following the wisdom of poet, scholar, and theologian Rumi, here are a few steps to leave a great legacy:
1 Whatever is in your mind, forget it. Rid yourself of worldly, pre-conceived, and social constraints set for yourself. Regularly reflect and decide what is most important in your life, then continually seek knowledge about it and improvements for it. The truths you discover will lead you to what you can most contribute and where. This process shall be repeated throughout your life as you grow and experience life, but the most meaningful purpose will always come back around.
2 Whatever is in your hand, give it. Supporting what is good and true about the lives and causes that are most important to each of us is a purpose we all share. We all have riches to share with others every day, whether it is time, money, a positive attitude, or kindness.
3 Whatever is your fate, accept it! Don’t deny yourself your true passions; doing so will deny it from others and diminish your legacy. When you live from your soul, through your passions, you will experience joy. This joy provides the energy required to serve and give to others. Your passions, and the values associated with them, will ultimately be your legacy.
A meaningful and positive legacy develops from a dedication to self-reflection and purpose. Always remember: What you seek is seeking you. -Rumi
